Background of Anwara Upazila

The name Anwara originates from the name of its feudal lord Anoporam in Deyang. When the Arakanese king Meng Palaung Muslim name (Sekandar Shah) died in 1593, his eldest son Meng Rajyagimuslim (Salim Shah) became the king of Arakan (1593-1612). Due to the disobedience of the central king, the king of Arakan invaded Deyang, the feudal kingdom of the feudal lord Anaparom, with a huge army of eighty thousand soldiers and seven thousand war elephants. A fierce battle was organized on both sides. King Anaporam himself was seriously wounded in this battle and a large number of people on both sides were killed. In the face of a fierce attack by the Arakanese forces, Anaporam fled to Sandwip with his wife, son, sister Arundhati and Portuguese general Gonzalez, along with a large number of Portuguese warships. Then he married his sister Arundhati to Gonjalish. The inhabitants of Deyang lost their beloved king Anaporam and became angry with the Mugh Sanyas. The area was named Anapora after the ruined Stupa Raj office at Anporam. On the other hand, the location of the royal office of King Anaporam is known as Anapora, Anopara, Anwara, Anwara and lastly Anwara.

Abdul Karim attributes the origin of the name Anwara to a Muslim scholar named Anwar Khan. But according to historical data, from that ancient Arakan period to the Mughal British rule, no historical woman named 'Anwara' or any man named 'Anwar Khan' is found in the history review. Even this poetic name called 'Anwara' is not found in the medieval poets of Arakan Raj Sabha or any later poet.That is why Abdul Karim could not come to the right conclusion about the name of literary scholar Anwara. However, in the political history of Arakan, King Anaporam is a well-known name who was the feudal lord of Rosang or Deyang at that time.King Todarmal's 'Taksim Jamate' of the government of Emperor Akbar (1575-1705) mentions seven parganas of Chatigaon in the government, including Deyang and one pargana. The Mughal rule came to an end on 23 January 171 when Islamabad was handed over to the British by Nawab Mir Qasim. The British started their rule by naming Islamabad as Chittagong. Governance system of Deyang Pargana from 162-182.There are two methods of civil and criminal. At that time a court named 'Anwara Munsefi Court' was established in Deyang Pargana. The Collector was entitled to exercise his powers as the overall overseer of civil justice. Dewans under him administered local civil trials. In 182, the Committee of Circuits again divided Chittagong into nine chaklas. Deyang was one of them.The boundaries of Deyang Chakla are thus defined - west of the Choanja and Chankhali canals, east and south of Karnafuli, and east of the Bay of Bengal, north of the Conch River. The names of the dewans of Deyang Pargana or Deyang Chakla from 182 to 1890 are: Dewan Manohar Ali Khan of Dewan, Dewan Hossain Khan, Lalaram Roy of Parikora, Kali Charan Roy, Gauri Sankar Roy, Dewa Buddha Nath, Anwar Ali Khan and others. On 6 December 1890, the British government again issued a decree bisecting Deyang Chakla. In one part, Anwara, Barkhain, Haildhar, Parikora, Battali, Barumchara, Raipur, Bairag, Barshat Union and 8 square miles of area were renamed as Anwara Thana by removing the word 'O' from the former name Anwara. Anwara Thana Upazila was inaugurated on 16 December 1982 under the Local Government Thana Administration Reorganization Ordinance 1982 under the Administration Decentralization Program. The first Upazila Nirbahi Officer was Mr. Atiqul Islam Chowdhury, an administrative officer with the powers of a first class magistrate and the first Upazila Parishad Chairman was Advocate Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury.
